CalWORKs

The California Work Opportunity and Responsibility to Kids (CalWORKs) program at College of the Desert provides intentional and intensive support services and resources to parenting and/or expecting students who are eligible CalWORKs recipients. In collaboration with the Riverside County Department of Public Social Services (DPSS) and the Greater Avenues for Independence (GAIN) program, CalWORKs supports students in navigating academic pathways, meeting county participation requirements, and progressing toward educational and career completion.

The primary purpose of the CalWORKs program is to promote student persistence, completion, and long-term economic self-sufficiency. The program supports employability through postsecondary educational attainment, career development, and on-campus work study opportunities, facilitating students’ transition from public assistance to sustained economic stability.

CalWORKs provides individualized academic, career, and transfer counseling delivered by dedicated counselors who assist students in identifying clear educational and career goals and developing comprehensive Student Educational Plans (SEPs). The program utilizes a case management model to ensure coordinated support and equitable access to campus and community resources that promote retention, completion, and workforce readiness.
