Home Health Aide

The Home Health Aide program prepares men and women to assist with the routine care and treatments of clients in their homes. These services include personal health care as well as food purchasing, meal planning, laundry, and light housekeeping. Successful completion of the program results in eligibility to take the state approved tests that lead to certification as a Home Health Aide.

The course of study includes 27 hours of classroom instruction and 27 hours of supervised clinical experience. Students wishing to enter the program must be certified as a nursing assistant in California. Specific information regarding the program may be obtained by contacting the Office of Health Sciences & Education.

Home Health Aide certificate is locally approved and are NOT notated on the student's academic transcript in accordance with the State regulations.

Learning Outcomes

Upon satisfactory completion of this program students will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide high-quality care to individuals in home health settings, including personal care, essential communications, safety, meal planning, and maintaining a healthful environment.
  2. Apply theoretical knowledge and hands-on experiences to effectively assist individuals with daily living activities, monitor and report changes in health status, and work collaboratively with other healthcare professionals to provide comprehensive care.
  3. Utilize practical communication skills, including active listening, empathy, and cultural competence, to build positive relationships with clients and their families.
  4. Adhere to ethical principles and confidentiality requirements in providing home health care.
  5. Demonstrate competence in performing basic care procedures, such as assisting individuals with daily hygiene routines, first aid, and using digital tools for record-keeping and communication in home health care.
  6. Understand the role and responsibilities of the home health aide within the broader health care system, including the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration and the need for ongoing professional development.
  7. Meet the eligibility requirements to take the state-approved test for certification as a nursing assistant.
