Art History
This program provides the academic background and experience to prepare students for a career, or further education at a four-year institution, in art history and related fields, such as museum studies, art education, and arts administration. The Associate in Arts in Art History for Transfer, also called the Art History AA-T Degree, prepares students to transfer to the CSU or UC systems to complete a baccalaureate degree. The Art History program teaches critical thinking and communication skills, in the context of historical and aesthetic information about diverse global cultures, that empower all students to live a richer and more meaningful life, no matter their specific educational and career goals.
Students completing an Art History AA-T are guaranteed admission to the CSU system, but not to a particular campus or major. The Art History AA-T degree requires students to complete 60 degree applicable transfer units including completion of Cal-GETC and 18-20 units in the major with a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher. Title 5 requires that students must earn a minimum “C” (or "P") for each course in the major. There are no additional graduation requirements. Students are advised to consult with a counselor to verify transfer requirements.
Students with an Art History undergraduate degree are prepared for entry-level career opportunities in the arts, humanities, and education, and for graduate-level education. Art History majors may find work in museums and art galleries as curators, educators, exhibition designers, researchers, in marketing and outreach, and in art restoration and conservation; curatorial and conservation work often requires an advanced degree. There are also teaching opportunities at the elementary and high school levels for Art History majors with proper teaching credentials, while post-secondary teaching requires at least a master's degree in the field.
Upon satisfactory completion of this program students will be able to:
-
Describe the materials, techniques, conventions of representation, and systems of patronage involved in the production of art and architecture in different times and places.
-
Explain the functions of art in human society to express religious beliefs, political power, social relations, and psychological experience throughout history and across cultures.
-
Evaluate works of art in relation to socio-historical context, and influence on subsequent cultural developments and human activity.
-
Transfer successfully to an Art History baccalaureate program in the CSU system, or at another college or university.
