AB 1705 - California Community Colleges Assessment & Placement
Students now can enroll in specified transfer-level English and math courses.
Assembly Bill 1705 is a California law designed to ensure that students who have graduated from high school in the United States or have received high school equivalency are placed directly into college-level English and math/quantitative reasoning courses that align with the requirements for their intended certificate, associate degree, or transfer goals. The information provided below offers an overview of the available options to meet these requirements at College of the Desert (COD).
English Placement
All students will begin in college-level English. At COD, there are two options, both covering the same content with the same title, but ENGL C1000E offers additional support for students who need extra help.
- ENGL C1000 Academic Reading and Writing (4 units)
ENGL C1000E Academic Reading and Writing (5 units). The extra unit offers additional in class opportunities to get assistance with assignments. Recommended for students who could benefit from additional support.
Math Placement
College of the Desert offers a variety of college-level math courses. Some majors have specific math course requirements, while others do not. It is recommended that you consult with a counselor to determine the most appropriate math course based on your academic goals and intended major.
Math Placement for STEM Majors
Students in STEM majors (Biology, Computer Science, Mathematics, Engineering, etc) are placed into math based on the criteria below. Please bring your high school transcripts to meet with a counselor to discuss placement and receive any necessary waivers.
